The circumstances currently in Darfur/Sudan? Question for people who know this subject very well.?

Hi,

I’ve been researching what is going on in Darfur, and there seems to be quite a lot of information. And besides that, some say it’s a religious thing, others say it’s ethnicity (which kind of falls under religion), and others say it is over oil and such. This is what I know, so please make any corrections and further information when you answer.

Darfur is a providence in Western Sudan. In northern Sudan lives Muslim Arabs (mainly Muslim, and mainly Arabs), and in the South you have the African Christians (again, mainly African, and mainly Christian). For years, these two groups have not gotten along. But recently (in the last decade or so) valuable resources have been found in Southern Sudan-mostly oil. The Sudanese government wants to use the resources, and so to get to them, they make the ‘African Christians’ move to another area. The government then uses the money for themselves, and the ‘African Christians’ don’t get any of it, even though it was found in their land. Upset by this, the ‘African Christians’ get angry, and start a war with the ‘Muslim Arabs.’ The ‘African Christians’ are known as the rebels, and the ‘Muslim Arabs’ send their army called Janjaweed after them, and they fight. After this becomes a great problem, the Sudanese government starts to work with the ‘Muslim Arabs’ sends their army to fight the Rebels, while Janjaweed goes into ‘Christian African’ villages and attacks them.

So that’s what I know for how all this came about. I do know about the torture, rape, enslavement, and refugees in Chad. Along with that, I know that the U.N. doesn’t want to get involved because Sudan are allies (or close to) with Russia and China, and also because it isn’t economically efficient.

If I have missed anything or have it all wrong when it comes to the base of problems with Darfur, please let me know.

Thanks

How do I raise awareness about the tragic food situation in Darfur?

The World Food Program announced in late April that it was going to have to cut the food rations given to the
Almost 3 million people depend on this food in half. This is because it only has gotten one third of the needed to feed the people of Sudan. So it cut the individual food supply from the necessary 2,100 calories a day to 1,050 calories
for the refugees who have already suffered from the Janjaweed militias, will suffer even more, because some countries are many more times concerned with improving their military to destroy life, than to save it.
The US is contributing far more than other nations, and Bush wants to send $225m more in aid, added to the 180 million already sent.

4.5m, from Libya was the next largest contribution.

How do I, as an American citizen, encourage other nations to contribute more to the inadequately funded World Food Program?

Where is Sudan located? Just Africa? If so, I don’t understand this quote…help =(?

I thought i’d give you the whole paragraph gist of it just in case i misread something else. Why does this quote make it sound like Sudan is located in Afghanistan:

“This may reflect the political turmoil in some of these countries over the past decade with the numbers representing refugee claimants (in 2002, refugees accounted for 94.4% of
immigrants from Afghanistan, 91.5% from Sudan, 20.0% from Columbia, and 14.9% from Iran; refugees accounted for 2% or less in the other countries listed below).”

Can someone translate for me please. Thank you.

how do i do a online source intext citation?

The Bush Administration has recognized these atrocities – carried out against civilians primarily by the government of Sudan and its allied Janjaweed militias – as genocide. António Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has described the situation in Sudan and Chad as “the largest and most complex humanitarian problem on the globe.”

thats what i am citing the site is http://www.savedarfur.org/pages/background

www.SaveDarfur.org says the white house recognizes the genocide being carried out on civilians, mainly by the government of Sudan and its Janjaweed militias. the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, describes the situation in Sudan and Chad as “the largest and most complex humanitarian problem on the globe.” (http://www.savedarfur.org/pages/background)

correct?

Lost boys of Sudan? HW help?

What year did the Lost Boys of Sudan start walking to the refugee camp in Kenya?

We must stop the genocide happening as we speak in the Sudan. Please log onto Oprah.com for details. Comment

I was horrified to see George Clooney’s report on the refugee camps in Dakur. Lisa Ling was on location in the Sudan. We have a responsibility as human beings to do something. I don’t know what I am going to do, but I have to take some action. I won’t rest until I do. I know I joke a lot on this forum to break the monotony. Well, this should bust it wide open. Please log on to Oprah.com and see for yourselves.
It could be our children next. I was so impressed by the three college boys who went to the Sudan and risked their lives to obtain first hand knowledge of the situation, then came back and rallied the country, touring and lecturing to collect funds and support for the victims over there. I was proud of those boys, and had never in my life seen them before. Just goes to show what a few people can do when determined. They could have chosen to be typical American college students, me-oriented and using their free time to party and have fun. They made me ashamed of myself that I have done nothing when there is a Holocaust happening right now as I type. I for one intend to do something about it.
Forsaken, if you bothered to read then you would know that those questions would be answered by logging on to the site that I mentioned, not once but twice. But with an attitude such as yours, why bother.
I care and I intend to show it. You all take care now.
I see that idiocy abounds in this forum.
The correct spelling is Darfur for anyone interested.

What do yall think about the Palestinians in the refugee camps?

i am talkin bout the innocent ones. i know you dont want them there and trust me they dont wanna be there either if they had a choice between your refugee camp and their own country they would go home. But they dont have a right of return so they cant. For some reason I have a feeling G-Bone doesnt like them at all. You guys have helped alot and no one is doubting that. I hate how the arab countries are making such a big deal over housing us.Where do you expect us to go? To Italy? Sudan? We cant go back to Palestine we dont have a choice.

So honestly, what do you think about them and what do you think should be done about the 5 million Palestinian refugees scattered around the world?
i know the treatment is bad i know people who just came from a refugee camps, but atleast we have a temporary place to stay until we rise again and take back what is rightfully ours.
BIL ROO7 BIL DAM NIFDEKI YA FALESTEEN!!!!

I just want to know if there is a refugee camp in dakar, with people from Sudan. If so, can I trace someone?

Why brutalisation of 300 sudanese refugees in Cairo by police has been swept under carpet?

Why tragedy did not receive worthwhile coverage? Why the muslims who rare raising so much hue and cry over atrocities on Palestinians and on a section of Iraqui insurgents took it so matter of fac, the were refugees from darfour in south sudan , where they faced massacres there from the civil war , it results of about 50 000 killed , and about a million refugee , ran away from the masacres … some of them came to egypt (3000) and were under the authoriti of the supreme committe of refugees in cairo , they complained about descremination and they have proplems here , but the committi didn’t accept there complains , so they left homes (if the had in egypt) , gathered and stayed in Mostafa Mahmoud square ,in the classy district of mohandeseen , they stayed for three months , made premetive tents, until once the egyptian authorities decided to evacuate the area from them , so they sent troops of anti riot soldiers and officers of police ( in thousands, armed and well equiped) suddenly
