Hi,
I’ve been researching what is going on in Darfur, and there seems to be quite a lot of information. And besides that, some say it’s a religious thing, others say it’s ethnicity (which kind of falls under religion), and others say it is over oil and such. This is what I know, so please make any corrections and further information when you answer.
Darfur is a providence in Western Sudan. In northern Sudan lives Muslim Arabs (mainly Muslim, and mainly Arabs), and in the South you have the African Christians (again, mainly African, and mainly Christian). For years, these two groups have not gotten along. But recently (in the last decade or so) valuable resources have been found in Southern Sudan-mostly oil. The Sudanese government wants to use the resources, and so to get to them, they make the ‘African Christians’ move to another area. The government then uses the money for themselves, and the ‘African Christians’ don’t get any of it, even though it was found in their land. Upset by this, the ‘African Christians’ get angry, and start a war with the ‘Muslim Arabs.’ The ‘African Christians’ are known as the rebels, and the ‘Muslim Arabs’ send their army called Janjaweed after them, and they fight. After this becomes a great problem, the Sudanese government starts to work with the ‘Muslim Arabs’ sends their army to fight the Rebels, while Janjaweed goes into ‘Christian African’ villages and attacks them.
So that’s what I know for how all this came about. I do know about the torture, rape, enslavement, and refugees in Chad. Along with that, I know that the U.N. doesn’t want to get involved because Sudan are allies (or close to) with Russia and China, and also because it isn’t economically efficient.
If I have missed anything or have it all wrong when it comes to the base of problems with Darfur, please let me know.
Thanks
